Procedure

Procedure Description:
Lumbar discectomy

What To Expect:
Some back pain from surgery for a few weeks. Relief of leg pain is variable, may be immediate or may take days. Can go home same day or next morning.

Preprocedure:
Nothing by mouth after midnight. Please arrive in the Surgical Admissions Unit at least 90 minutes before the scheduled procedure. Be prepared to stay overnight if necessary.

Postprocedure:
Dressing may be removed after 72 hours. You may shower(wet the incision) after 72 hours. Staples need to be removed in 7 to 10 days. If you have steri-strips please carefully peel these off after 7 days. Follow up will usually be within 7 to 14 days. Walking is okay but bending and lifting should be restricted. You may drive after a week.
